Ware Academy considers it a vital part of our mission to make our program available to students in the Middle Peninsula and Tidewater areas. Economic diversity enriches our school’s educational environment. Because the school is determined to make a Ware Academy education accessible to many families from various economic backgrounds, the school offers the following range of tuitions based upon family need. We call this program Variable Tuition. This program is offered to any family who has a full-time, 5-Day student in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Variable Tuition is a need-based tuition assistance program similar to those used by many private schools. This program allows families to apply for reduced tuition that is right for each families financial situation. Read more about Variable Tuition here.
Every family is expected to assist with the cost of tuition and appropriate fees, thereby supporting the school community to the extent family circumstances permit. In order to assess what a family can contribute for educational costs, Ware Academy utilizes FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment as an objective third party. FACTS calculations provide the baseline for our Variable Tuition determinations. Note that the school is not able to provide Variable Tuition to every deserving student. We work with the available resources to make the school accessible to as many students and families as possible.
In order to find the appropriate amount of tuition, the financial strength of each family must be assessed. Many factors are considered: both taxable and non-taxable income, assets, number of dependents and number of children attending other tuition charging schools. Additionally, we consider medical expenses, consumer debt, fair market value of vehicles, recreation vehicles, vacation expenses, student enrichment and athletic activities, as well as earning potential for a spouse not employed outside the home.
The Variable Tuition Process:
- Complete the Parent’s Financial Statement (PFS) online — a $30.00 fee applies at https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/3FPXK (the FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Online Application) and submit to FACTS.
- Ware Academy cannot make a Variable Tuition decision until an financial application is on file. Notification of tuition decisions will be made by mail. Although decisions regarding Admission and Variable Tuition are made at the same time, the two processes are separate. All financial information families provide will be held in strict confidence and will not be shared with anyone outside the Variable Tuition Committee.
- We recognize that a Ware Academy education is a significant investment and one that will prepare our students for secondary school and beyond.
To provide financial flexibility, Ware Academy offers the following ways to pay each year’s tuition:
1) One-Time Payment
Pay 100% of the tuition directly to the school via credit card, cash, check or money order by July 1st. Participation in the tuition refund plan is optional. Associated Credit Card fees will be billed to the responsible party.
2) Payment in Installments
A) Pay tuition in four equal installments due on July 1, October 1, January 1 and April 1. All payments must be made through FACTS. Participation in the tuition refund plan is required.
B) Make twelve monthly installments due by the 20th of each month (July 1 – June 1). All payments must be made through FACTS. Participation in the tuition refund plan is required.
FACTS is an automated payment system authorizing a bank or credit card company to transfer funds automatically to the school on the installment payment dates traditional to the school. Pre-authorized automated payments can be made from one’s checking or savings account or by way of Master Card, Discover or American Express.

What is Variable Tuition?
Variable Tuition is a need-based tuition assistance program similar to those used by many private schools. This program allows families to apply for reduced tuition that is right for their families’ financial situation. Thus, this makes a Ware Academy education affordable to many qualified students who could not otherwise join our school community.
How does Variable Tuition work?
Any family (current or new) of a full time PK-4 through eighth grade student may apply for Variable Tuition if they are concerned about affording the full tuition rate at Ware Academy. Many factors are considered when determining the tuition amount a family is able to pay. This includes income, assets, unusual expenses, and the size of the family. The resources available for the family in a given year must also be considered in light of the Variable Tuition awards available at Ware.
An application for Variable Tuition does not affect the re-enrollment or admission process. Regardless of financial need, parents should initiate the re-enrollment or admission process as early as possible. Families may apply for Variable Tuition only after they have applied for re-enrollment or admission to the school.
It is not possible for a family or the school to estimate the tuition level for which a family qualifies without the completion of a Variable Tuition application. Applications are submitted directly to FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment (FACTS), a third party agency. FACTS evaluates the application based on criteria set by the school and makes a recommendation to the Variable Tuition committee. Families are notified of the tuition level for which they qualify from the school’s financial office.
Unfortunately, the school is not able to provide Variable Tuition to every deserving student. We work within the available resources to make the school accessible to as many students and families as possible.
Do I need to apply to Ware Academy to receive confirmation of Variable Tuition?
Upon completion of my Variable Tuition application will I receive confirmation of my Variable Tuition award?
Typically, within 2 weeks of providing all required information to our confidential third party service we will have the information needed to make your award.
Should every new family submit an application for Variable Tuition?
No. Only families who feel that they may not be able to reach the top range of the Variable Tuition should submit an application.
Do I need to apply for Variable Tuition every year?
Yes. A new application is required to be submitted each year. If you don’t qualify one year, you are welcome to apply the following year.
Do I apply for admission separately from applying for Variable Tuition?
Yes. For new students, application to Ware Academy and application for Variable Tuition are two separate processes. However, new families may complete both applications simultaneously.
Are some families awarded full tuition?
No. Every family is required to make a financial investment in their child’s education. Our commitment to providing Variable Tuition means that we are sharing in that investment with you. No family will receive Variable Tuition that is less than the published range.
Who should I contact with questions regarding Variable Tuition?
Questions about Variable Tuition should be directed to the Head of School, the Business Office and the Director of Enrollment.
