2011 SUMMER READING LIST Rising K and 1st are not required to read a specific book or books BUT Mrs. Fleet and Mrs.VanLeeuwen require the children to read all summer. Rising 2nd Graders are required to read Horrible Harry Cracks the Code or Flat Stanley’s Mount Rushmore Calamity independently. They are also required to read with a partner one book from the series “My Weird School”. Rising 3rd Graders are required to read a title from the Humphrey Hamster series. It may be read with a partner or independently. They are also required to continue their reading with one book by Beverly Cleary in which Ramona Quimby and/or Henry Huggins appear as central character(s), or one from the Jack Gets a Clue series. All students in grades 3-8 are required to develop an index card for every book they read. Included on each card must be: title, author, copyright date, number of pages, their name, the month and year in which they finished the book and comment about the book. Rising 4th Graders are required to read The Black Stallion by Walter Farley and Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone. Rising 5th Graders are required to read Savvy by Ingrid Law and two other books at level for a total of three. Rising Sixth Graders are required to read Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and two other books at level for a total of three. (There is a great sequel to the required book called Catching Fire) Rising Seventh Graders are required to read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, either The Dead and the Gone or Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer and a book of choice for a total of three. Once you read one of Ms. Pfeffer’s books you’ll want to read the other and she completes the trilogy in This World We Live In. Rising Eighth Graders are required to read If I Should Die Before I Wake by Han Nolan, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by S. Covey. Students will earn a point for their BLUE or GREEN team by turning in an index card for every book they read. Students will be required to continue this practice during the school year and for their entire career at Ware. Recommended to parents a book called Book Crush by Nancy Pearl. It contains lists of books for children of all ages. This year, for teens, the web site audiobooksync.com is making available two free downloads every week beginning June 23rd until August 11th.
