2010-2011 Enrichment Activities

Since the beginning of the school year Ware Academy has continued to focus on the fine and performing arts for its students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight. Utilizing the funds received from a private foundation, the school has not only sought to expand its offerings for currently enrolled students but also extend invitations to students in the Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex schools as well as members of the public to attend special performances. To date students from Thomas Hunter’s and Middlesex Elementary’s fifth grades and individual families have attended performances by storyteller Sheila Arnold and the Virginia Opera’s Giovanni and the Beanstalk.

Each year the school dedicates one week towards an expanded variety of opportunities for students to explore and create. Members of the school’s fine and performing arts department and artisans from the community are invited to share their talent and expertise with the students. The theme for this year’s program was titled “Beyond Our Wildest Dreams”. Students enjoyed working on an art project, which focused on the author Eric Carle, with local Middlesex County artist Jenny McMurtrie, crafted assorted types of pottery with Wendy Marshall of the Bay School of Arts and Martha Haze of Lazy Daze Pottery in Mathews, composed musical scores and performed opera with Ware Academy music teacher, Ms. Regina South, made illustrations by block printing with instruction from Gloucester artist, Patty Rosenberg, and enjoyed learning  how to make three-dimensional wind socks with Ware Academy art teacher, Linda Brent. The students also participated in activities geared towards physical fitness and mental wellness by attending yoga classes taught by Nicolle Morgan, owner of Olive for Yoga in Deltaville, Kat Sharp owner of Third Floor Yoga in Mathews, and personal yoga instructor Sterling Dise, Zumba lessons were presented by April Hancock from the Mathews YMCA and Taekwondo lessons provided by owner, Keira Bertrand, of The Hayes Black Belt Academy.  In addition, Lower School students traveled to the Ferguson Center to see a production by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Middle School Students viewed the film Only When I Dance at the Mathews Film Society.

In February, as part of the school’s celebration of Black History Month, the students were treated to a performance by the MSG Acoustic Blues Trio. Students learned the continued significance of African American history and its influence on this genre in the past and today. Students also participated in a workshop conducted by the artists on performing the blues.

In March, the school hosted renowned percussionist and drummer, Tom Teasley in a week long artist in residency. Mr. Teasley held a workshop on Monday, March 28th for interested public schools students. The residency culminated on Friday, April 1st with a school wide art show and a concert featuring Tom Teasley, Ware Students and members of the public.

Ware Academy’s enrichment calendar ended the year with a Stuart Little performance by Theatre IV and a performance by The Bowling Green College Choir.
