Grasses for the Masses

As one of their projects for Marine Biology, the eighth graders chose to mentor the third graders by participating in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s “Grasses for the Masses.” Both grades have worked together to plant and harvest Wild Celery, a type of Bay grass, over the past ten weeks. On Thursday, May 6th, two eighth graders represented Ware Academy and this effort by planting the grasses at Westover Plantation on the James River. This is just one of the school’s “Be-A-Ware” projects to help educate and empower its students to become stewards of their environment.

Lower School SCA Annual Coat Drive - GREAT SUCCESS!

The coat drive officially ended on Friday, January 22nd. The students gathered a total of 195 coats. As a finale, the Head of School, Mr. Thomas, donated his own coats to push the school’s total donation over the 200 mark, at 222! Below are the number of coats collected from each division:

Primary School - 55 coats

Lower School - 78 coats

Middle School - 62 coat.

The Lower School Officers and Class Representatives provided all of the advertisement for the event.  They made posters, announcements, and even spoke on a local radio station about their cause. In the end, there were twenty lawn bags filled with coats!

Thank you to everyone who donated coats to help keep others in need warm during these cold months.

Middle School Students and the Humane Society

Every Monday, beginning in October, Middle School Students take turns going to the Gloucester–Mathews Humane Society to help care for the animals. Most visits include walking the dogs and spending quality time with the cats and kittens.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Thursday, December 17th

Ware Academy Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students visited The Gloucester-Mathews Humane  Society. They delivered an abundance of dog and cat food, toys, and homemade dog biscuits (which they made themselves during class).  In return the Humane Society gave the children a presentation about how to act when you first meet a dog.

Helping Families in Need

Ware Academy students participated in a Middle School SCA holiday community service project - Helping Families in Need. During the month of December every class adopted a family, purchasing items for each of the family members including toys, clothing, and family gifts for the holidays. On Thursday, December 17th , Angie E. Dunston, Middle School Instructor and SCA sponsor, along with student elves delivered over four hundred presents to the eight families that were adopted from our surrounding three counties. Mrs. Dunston worked closely with Social Services and the Salvation Army during this drive.
